Review: 2022 Toyota Hilux

Published: Feb 16, 2022 10:04 AM

With over 50,000 units sold in Australia in 2021 alone, the Toyota Hilux is genuinely an undisputed market leader and the gold standard of the class. And it has been, practically since it was introduced in 1968, a position it managed to retain for eight distinctive generations and countless model changes, redesigns, and mid-year changes. Even though the other similar vehicles offer the same combination of rugged mechanics, equipment, payload and off-road capabilities, the Toyota Hilux is still regarded as the best choice along with its fierce enemy, Ford Ranger. The current model was introduced in 2015 and refreshed in 2020, and let’s see if it still has what it takes to be an Australian king of pickup trucks?

Versions And Grades

One of the key reasons for its popularity is the fact that Hilux is available in a wide range of specifications. From the single cab, bare chassis design to luxury-appointed, off-road vehicles, it appeals to many buyers with different needs. The Hilux lineup starts with a Workmate model, a bare-bones vehicle available in single, extended or double cab configuration with a petrol engine. The SR model is one grade up, and it features a double cab design with equipment and features still designed towards professional users. SR5 trim level is an excellent balance between work vehicle which can be used on the street or as a daily commute. However, the Hilux Rogue and Rugged X (top grades) are dedicated off-road models, with Rugged X being delivered with all kinds of cool features like black-out trim, snorkel, unique wheels and aggressive all-terrain tires. Of course, since the Hilux range includes working trucks as well as flashy off-road models, the lower spec models are available as 4×2 or Hi-Riders, and upper grades come only with capable 4×4 drive trains.

The Mechanics

Buyers can find three engines under the bonnet of 2022 Hilux for the Australian market. One petrol and two diesel units all with four-cylinder and equipped with modern technology. The base engine is a 2.7-litre petrol unit with 122 kW and 245 Nm of torque. This engine is available only on Workmate grade and can be had with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. You cannot expect any performance from this four-cylinder since it was designed to be a rugged and dependable unit intended for the professional market and people who need Hilux to be a tool for their trade.

For buyers who want a 4×4 Hilux, there are two engine options in the form of two four-cylinder diesels. The first one is 2.4-litre with 110 kW and 400 Nm of torque, designed to be frugal and powerful enough for users who wants a balance between a work truck and a daily vehicle. However, the revised 2.8-litre, which is available at the top of the range, is a real gem. It delivers 150 kW but comes with two torque ratings. The 420 Nm version comes with a manual transmission, but the 500 Nm unit only comes with a 6-speed automatic. Toyota is proud to announce that regardless of the combination of engines you choose, your average consumption will not exceed 8.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.

Just days ago, Toyota introduced the Hilux GR, a performance version of the popular pickup. This special model will feature the same 2.8-litre engine but with 165 kW and massive 550 Nm of torque along with suspension modifications and unique exterior trim. However, before you start asking about the price of this desirable Hilux, we have to tell you that it is unclear if and when this model will be available on the Australian market.

The Features

The redesign of 2020 brought distinctive exterior changes in terms of a new grille and headlight design and interior improvements in terms of technology and features. The old dashboard design stayed the same, but it has been improved. All Hilux models now feature all-weather floor mats, a 4.2-inch multicolour information display in front of the driver, and an 8.0-inch infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. The very important thing to mention is the fact that Toyota wanted that all of its Hilux customers have a comprehensive safety package, so it included the Toyota Safety Sense systems, Stolen Vehicle Tracking System, Vehicle Stability Control and Automatic Collision Notification in every Hilux it sells, regardless of the grade level.

Of course, not all Hilux buyers are looking for base models with black rubber bumpers and plain white paint. The Toyota’s sales records show that a pretty big chunk of buyers is looking for lifestyle models like Hilux Rogue and Rugged X. Those packages turn the working class pickup into the flashy off-road dedicated machine and includes unique exterior details, bull bars, paint and graphics as well as more powerful 2.8-litre diesel engine, automatic transmission, and of course, 4×4 drive train. Interestingly, the Rugged X comes with 17-inch wheels, while Rouge comes with 18-inch alloys wrapped in all-terrain rubber. Those grades also have LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, leather interior, bodyside mouldings, wheel arches extensions for a more aggressive look, lockable differentials, a premium audio system and much more.

The Conclusion

Along with the Ford Ranger, Hilux is the best choice if you are looking for a pickup truck for your work, family duties or off-road expeditions. Its main strengths are quality, variety of versions and options and legacy as a highly dependable vehicle for all purposes. But, as good as it is, Hilux is not perfect and compared to some more modern competitors, it lacks refinement and an 8-speed gearbox. The prices start at very affordable $30,197 driveaway for the base 4×2 Workmate version but go to pretty expensive $75,916 driveaway for Rugged X with a 4×4 drive train. However, regardless of its age, Hilux is rightfully on the top of this segment, and despite the high price for upper levels, it is still a wise investment if you are looking for such a vehicle.
