The Everest is based on a ladder frame platform called T6 which it shares with the Ranger ute (although the Everest SUV trades in the ute’s leaf rear springs for coils).

Both vehicles have been developed in Australia by Ford and have been tested here extensively. It really shows.

A V6 Everest on suitably grippy and pillowy tyres is a terrific vehicle to drive in the rugged conditions you’ll find in country and outback Australia.

We’re talking those rutted red gravel roads that stretch to the horizon. Or those bumpy bitumen highways with their broken edges and potholes. It is just so good in those conditions.

It has the handling, steering, ride, quietness and sumptuous, smooth engine response to place it above any of its rivals completing this task. The biggest issue may be its 80-litre fuel tank, which means stopping more often than you may like. A 140 litre tank is an accessory.

We’d also put a proviso on the Platinum because its 21-inch low profile rubber adds a harsh edge to the ride. The 17- and 18-inch options make a lot more sense.

Turn off the road and start doing some serious off-roading and you’ll find the Everest copes rather than truly excels. The Toyota Prado is better at the truly rugged stuff.

The 2.0-litre version of the Everest doesn’t impress as much because it doesn’t quite have the same guts as the V6. We are talking vehicles in excess of 2300kg here. But it matches its fellow four cylinders such as the Prado and MU-X.

The official fuel economy claims for both Everest engines are optimistic if you go off-road, tow or drive around town.

Speaking of which, none of these big SUVs are optimal for urban driving, but the Everest is one of the most cohesive. The 10-speed automatic transmission, with so many early gears stacked together, is noticeable in the cut and thrust of urban traffic.

It’s not annoying, but the funny little gear shifter is. It offers manual changes via buttons on the side, like a big US pick-up truck. Just smells of cheap!

2025 Ford Everest Verdict

One of the main problems with the Everest is too many people use it as everyday urban transport.
